         Second Chances

Sometimes we all take chances,
That’s what I did and I know you did the same.
I loved you like the moon loves the sky,
And you claimed you loved me, too.

When I think back on all that was said,
The thoughts we had,
The things we did,
I should have known we were doomed to never live.

Every time we took a chance,
One more try,
I should have realized then all the tears I’d cry-
Weren’t worth a second chance.

But even then love took control,
Of my thoughts, my actions,
My words, my heart,
All belonged to you.

We tried our very best-
With a second chance.
Hearts were broken, and “love” was just
Another word.

No feeling was left, not a breath was left to breathe.
With each minute, each hour, and
Each passing day,
Nothing got any simpler.

All I thought about was you.
The moon still shone, the stars
Continued twinkling,
But not one could stir my heart.

Forgiveness was way past due,
But for the two of us,
It was something we could never do.

Forgiving for most would have been more than simple,
But for you and me,
Forgiving and forgetting would
Really be an issue.

Time and space,
And still all I heard, all I saw, all I wanted was you.
Many months the sun had risen,
And then had set,
But still none of my sentiments had changed.

The tides rose-
But nothing of another second chance.
Before I knew it love was no longer in my heart.
Time had cured me, cleared my mind.

Change was finally settling in,
And never again would I fall in love-
With more than second chances.
